Their gentle baas and the whispering of the gales among the solo tree on the mountaintop were his only co-dwellers. Day upon day, looking out for his charges inculcated in him a sense of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. On one such day out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plot.
Stories of wolves hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One day he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw no beast.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a few days more. Yet, one day, a real wolf did charge at the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
